Sumiao to Raise Money for Animal Rescue Nonprofits in Honor of Year of the Dog
Chinese New Year festivities officially begin on February 16 and according to the Chinese calendar, 2018 marks a year to celebrate and emulate the most loyal and truest animal companion in the Chinese zodiac. In honor of “man’s best friend” and The Year of the Dog, Kendall Square’s Sumiao Hunan Kitchen will donate 10% of all sales from their seven new La Rou dish selections during the month of February to the BARC (Boston Animal Rescue Collaborative) which aims to develop Boston's new generation of dedicated animal rights advocates. The donation from Sumiao Hunan Kitchen will benefit animal rescue nonprofits across the city, including the ARL (Animal Rescue League) and organizations in Cambridge and Somerville.
La Rou is a form of bacon that is widely popular in the Hunan region of China for its savory and rich smokey zest flavor. An impressive dish, La Rou’s focal ingredient is typically pork belly which is marinated and smoked with several Chinese spices such as ginger and scallion. The technique and preparation behind La Rou can take up to 5 days to reach its worthwhile tenderized and favorable end result.
At SHK, guests can choose from seven beautifully presented La Rou dishes with highlights including the Braised La Rou With Shang Gan (Hunan bacon, garlic, Shang gan, dark soy sauce, mini red chili garlic, mini red pepper - $25), Steamed La Rou (Hunan bacon, garlic, dark soy sauce, dried chili, fermented black soybean - $25), La Rou with Mushrooms (Hunan bacon, white beech mushroom, king trumpet mushroom, garlic, Fresno pepper, tea-tree plant mushroom, leek, dark soy sauce - $28) and La Niu Rou with Dried White Pepper (house-smoked dried beef flank, garlic, Fresno pepper, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, leek - $36), all of which will give back to BARC.
